Derek Howden

Director

Derek has huge experience at Westmount, having first joined the business in 1981. He is a mine of information on any Fine Art or Conservation packaging question, and currently spends most of his time on Operations and Finance.

In 1973 Geoff Howden established GH Paper Bag Co. aged 37, from the garage in his family home.

Stocking a range of paper bags for shops and small businesses in South London, the business grew and moved to commercial premises in Erith, Kent.

In those early years, Geoff recognised that to do business well he had to instil certain things into his employees. Even more, he had to live by those values himself. They were:

  • Positivity
  • Reliability
  • Effectiveness
  • Honesty

He didn't (to our knowledge) ever write these down. But we remain true to them, and they live on in everything we do at Westmount, ensuring that our customers receive great service, year in, year out.

1990's

Westmount begins to concentrate on industrial packaging, reducing focus on the retail sector and increasing stocks of products like cardboard boxes, packing tape and voidfill.

1996

Geoff's son, Derek Howden moves to Tunbridge Wells, Kent with his young family and sets up a Westmount branch in Tonbridge.

2003

The entire Westmount operation combines, and moves to a new location in Paddock Wood, Kent

2008-10

We obtain new customers in the art & museum sectors, and a full range of fine art and conservation products is introduced

2020-22

Westmount embraces e-commerce, honing our online store and ordering system to offer a rewarding and efficient customer experience

Manufacturing

It’s critical that supply issues never stop production, and we know that lost machine time is lost opportunity. This is why in 2010, Westmount designed a suite of stock management services for manufacturing businesses called ‘Stock & Serve’, so you never have to worry about packaging again! With our high-bay warehousing and flexible storage, we can manage large or small volumes, and offer dedicated account management to keep you updated and swiftly cater for changing requirements. Fine Art Packing

We know that quality and consistency is paramount in fine art packing, as much as having the right product. We stock a range of museum grade products in the correct specifications, such as S275 foam, Tyvek and glass tape; and our ever-growing knowledge of the sector means we are able to help you by sourcing hard-to-find items if needed. Please check our fine art products page to find all you need in one place.

Construction Industry

Speed counts in the construction industry; supply chain responses sometimes mean the difference between profit and loss. Westmount’s answer to this is a super-fast, dynamic delivery system so that those supplying the construction industry can rely on Westmount for bespoke or stock packaging, and know they’ll get it when they want it. Our transport fleet and customised stock management help you provide a FAST response to your customers’ needs. Contact one of our managers now to enquire.

Logistics

When shipping goods around the globe (particularly heavy freight) it’s paramount your packing teams and customers can rely on the packaging used to keep the products secure in transit. Westmount are a Transit Packaging business from the ground up; our product range is focused on protecting high and low value items during transit, including our specialist ‘Fine Art’ and ‘Removal’ packaging ranges. Check out our protective packaging and palletisation pages for more info on products that can help you.

Distribution / E-commerce

Shipping goods for a retailer? Or maybe your e-Commerce business? Whatever it is you’re distributing, efficient and effective packaging is needed to get the goods out the door as quickly, yet safely, as possible. Westmount will consult with you to understand your business goals, processes and operation, and recommend packaging to help achieve those goals – whether it be increased efficiency, reduced waste and/or improved unboxing experience.
